Packing and unpacking, again.

I am sitting in my living room surrounded by boxes and a packed up kitchen. Although I’ve managed to clear off the kitchen table and to scrounge together a cup of Earl Grey. I have a little something to tell you, and begins with a conversation…

‘I can’t move THERE’, I exclaimed when my husband first suggested that we move closer to his work. Forget how long he has to drive every day. ‘What about my blog? I won’t be a girl in Madrid anymore. If anyone’s actually out there reading, they’ll be disappointed! ‘

After moving beyond my self-centered blog brain, I realized, of course, this was the only practical thing to do. To move, again. But this time, we are moving to a truly magical Medieval city. And to tell you the truth, it’s only 25 minutes south (by train) of Madrid. But yes, my friends. This ‘girl in Madrid‘ will no longer be actually living in Madrid. This ‘girl 25 minutes (by train) south of Madrid’ will be moving to the city of Toledo. As in ‘Holy Toledo’!

So, in a few days we will be driving down to the region of Castilla-La Mancha. We will say hello to our new neighbours Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and settle into our brand new digs. I must admit, that I am thrilled that my kitchen size will be quadrupled, and that we will have plenty of room for guests. ‘It will be expansive’, says one of our spiritual friends. Indeed.

The fact that we get to live and walk everyday on roads that hold so many centuries of history is exciting. A whole new chapter. So, friend, come along with me on a new chapter of this little story. Who knows where the fork may lead…

Thanks so much for a wonderful blog! I’ve been living in Madrid for six months now, and have visited Toledo – how fantastic that you have the opportunity to live there, what a stunning city. I only wish I’d gotten to meet you before your exit: My boyfriend here isn’t much of a foodie! You mentioned a lavender olive oil cake, but I cannot find that post. Do you have a recipe? Would love to see it/hear about it. Much luck and happiness to you, and I look forward to more posts.

Hi there… Rodrigo from Mexico here. Toledo is a wonderful city. It is absolutely stunning. The cathedral is amazing. I hope you take some wonderful photos of turron, and mazapán (marzipan) and all those great Spanish candies.
I love food (as I already told you), and Mexico is a really great place for foodies, we have wonderful cuisine. I would realy like to show you some photos I’ve been taking of Mexican food and culture that I’m sure you would love.

I have been lurking for a while but had to comment on this exciting news. I have thoroughly enjoyed your stories from madrid, but am looking forward to hearing about this new chapter in your life as you discover Toledo. I will be coming to Madrid in September (my 4th visit in 6 months!) and Toledo and Segovia were 2 places on my list for day trips. Good luck with the move (and dont forget the dog!).

Thanks. I don’t think Peaches would let us leave her – she tends to howl when unhappy!

If you haven’t tried this place yet, check it out on your next trip to Madrid. http://www.tapasenestadopuro.com/. A super cool collaboration with one of Madrid’s star chefs, Paco Roncero, that I shot for earlier this year. Every inventive.

Wow! That’s so fantastic Katherine. What a beautiful place and not too far from the city. Just think it’s like Burnaby (but way more fantastical) to Vancouver! Glad to see your blog.

  14. Kaley / Jul 28 2010

I studied abroad in Toledo in 2008 so it holds a very special place in my heart! It’s so beautiful. Will you be living in Toledo proper or outside the walls?

    • katharine / Jul 28 2010

We’ll be living a 10 minute walk from the Casco Historico. Near the Toletum. Any special places that you recommend?

      • Kaley / Jul 30 2010

Haha, well, as a student, most of the places I loved were discotecas. I did love Enebro (located off the Plaza Mayor and also nearer to the Alcázar), Casón, la Abadía! Plus, you should definitely hike up the “mountain” a.k.a. hill to see Toledo from the other side of the river! Gorgeous!

  15. Kerrin @ MyKugelhopf / Jul 28 2010

    • katharine / Jul 28 2010

Thanks Kerrin. Yes, I did know before the posting – I’ve had an entire 2 weeks, haha! Good thing that we pack light, and have been living in a rented, furnished place. No furniture to move, just our dog. Looking forward to your visit!

    • katharine / Jul 28 2010

I’m happy to have you on my travels, and yes a foodie reunion is a great idea. Yes indeedy, Jeann-e ;) I’m feeling mildly gitty today, I think it’s the packing bit…

  20. Elisa / Jul 28 2010

Wow – it looks gorgeous. A new adventure and you will still be close enough to Madrid to go do your shopping if you want to. But think of all the new markets and grocers to discover – I am so jealous!

    • katharine / Jul 28 2010

Yes, close enough to still shop in Madrid – when I want to. It’s perfect :)
