A perfect slumber and Sunday morning waffles

Sunday morning waffles

After hours upon hours at Madrid and NYC airports, I was so relieved to finally arrive at my parents place relatively intact. With the rain falling outside, I nestled myself into a soft fluffy bed and drifted into a deep Canadian slumber.

the ingredients for an excellent post-travel slumber

The next morning I awoke to the delicious and familiar scent of my dad’s Sunday morning waffles with strawberries. Heavy pours of a rich amber maple syrup, of course.

Waking up to Sunday morning waffles

A perfect thing to arrive home to in Canada.

That does sound like the perfect way to wake up at home. I so miss the real thing myself and “something” with maple syrup is always on my plate when I go back to the US!

Beautiful. My dad always made the waffles but only for dinner! The best I ever woke up to was oatmeal on the rare winter Sunday morning and I loved it! Your images are heartwarming. I’ll be back home in less than a week.

Waffles, oh waffles! I wish I had a waffle maker, I’d go crazy with making them every weekend! Especially beer-batter ones with maple syrup and bacon.. ohhhh

      That sounds divine!

    Welcome back, eh!

It’s been so long since I’ve lived at home, but my parents have still kept my bedroom. Tons of pillows and amazing linens – I love sleeping in that bed. Especially when our dog is at the end slumbering away too. My Dad so doesn’t cook, but those waffles look lovely. My aunt lives in Vermont so might have a thing or two to say about Canadian maple syrup, but I know both are delicious!

Dear Gastroanthropologist, thank you for dropping by. Love your blog name, so great.

I can’t decide what looks more inviting – that bed with the perfect nestling pillow or the waffles with syrup and berries. Maybe I’ll have to test out my version of each of these in order to decide. I don’t know though, I may not have a way to equal your enthusiasm for being home, and that makes rest more restful and food more palatable.

Hi Katherine! I stumbled across your website today and I have to say you have really beautiful photography! It really stands out. I have been looking at A LOT of food blogs as I have recently started one of my own.

Mmm a deep Canadian slumber. I was just vacationing in Cape Breton and on PEI… but I can’t say that my slumbers were as thrilling, or as deep, as I was camping. Note to self: buy new pillows.

Hi Katherine, I can relate to the whole traveling process (Heathrow is a Zoo) after just arriving home from an extended European visit, post Food Bloggers Convention. It’s so wonderful to travel but it’s so nice to arrive home especially to my family and of course a comfy bed. They were waiting at the airport, my 8 yr old rushing to pass me a huge bouquet of flowers! The best way to arrive home! So sweet of your dad to welcome you home with the comfort of a special breakfast! Your blog is really lovely and I look forward to following your adventures.

Thank you Julie! I am definitely enjoying my family here – and my dad’s weekend breakfasts before heading back to Madrid next month.

Waffles are the one pastry I love to devour but hate to make myself; I gave a waffle maker away years ago and have no plans to acquire another one; your dad is so wonderful to make you fresh waffles after your long flight home, wow!!!!!

Thanks Joumana, it was indeed so sweet of him!

Hey you! This is such a gorgeous post, I know that feeling so well, when you crawl back into your own bed after a trip away. And those waffles! Ooph! Gorgeous. Haven’t had waffles in a long time, must make some soon x

    • katharine / Jun 19 2010

Thank you Mowie for dropping by. Such a pleasure- and thank you for the compliment. Fluffy beds are heaven!

You poor thing! Was Barajas chaos? It’s been awful the last few months, I’ve been delayed every time I fly lately. Bed, home and rain sound like the perfect antidote.

    • katharine / Jun 17 2010

Thank you- yes Barajas was chaos. A 4 hour delay in boarding…but anyways, I still love the energy of airports. So many comings and goings. Hellos and goodbyes…

How perfect! What kind of waffle batter does your dad use?

My other half got back yesterday from Vancouver with 3 litres of maple syrup stashed away in his bag. We will be having waffles this weekend – Marion Cunningham’s raised ones, to be exact. I cannot wait.
