Buenos dias, el desayuno in Madrid
Good morning friends.
Breakfast, el desayuno, is truly one of my favorite things in the world. I’ve always been a morning person- I love being one of the first ones up, a quiet- sacred time where you convene with the sunrise. A time to share your secrets with the universe. What will the day hold?
Breakfast reminds me of the color yellow. Of butter, and warm loaves of bread. Steam rising from bowls of café, of fresh squeezed juice. It’s such a happy time. All is possible.
Since coming to Spain, we’ve really spent time enjoying the typical desayuno. Café, tostas y zumo. Coffee, toast (with tomato) and orange juice…because to the Spanish, is there another juice? Practically a religious drink, you find orange juicers in every bar on every corner. My husband says it’s like drinking sunshine.
Madrid is a city that truly enjoys food. Indeed, they have carved out 5 official times to eat per day. I don’t mean on the run, or on the road. I mean sitting in a bar or with family, and enjoying.
Everyday eating in Madrid…
Circa 8am- desayuno, breakfast, café con leche and great wedges of toasted pan de pueblo with pureed fresh tomatoes, olive oil and salt, and often zumo.
Circa 11am- almuerzo, ‘a little morsel’, maybe café with a slice of tortilla de patatas or a puntita de jamón.
Circa 2pm- comida, a full 3+ course lunch with wine and maybe a siesta. This one lasts two hours, very civilized!
Circa 6pm- merienda, this is the sweetest part of the day- usually chocolate con churros o café with a sweet pastry.
Circa 10pm- cena, dinner or small tapas. Usually nothing too heavy with a few glasses of vino or una caña, a beer on tap served in a small glass.
So, anyways, back to breakfast. Here was mine the other day. ¡Delicioso!

D,
Thank you for the invitation, and the compliments Deb. Love your blogs as well!
Gracias.
Even though there is no direct sunlight shining on me as I sit at my office desk, just reading your blogs and taking in the beautiful photos makes me feel full of light and optimism. Thank you for this mini-break, and keep the blogs coming!
I’m so happy- thank you, you made my day.
You are living a dream…how inspiring. I wish you much luck and MANY delicious meals. I want café con leche y tostas con tomate for breakfast tomorrow. I might not be able to sleep just thinking about it.
DO THE FOODIES IN SPAIN KNOW THAT “THE GIRL FROM MADRID”
CAN BLOW THE WINDOWS OUT OF THE ROOM WHEN SHE SINGS???
I THINK A SOUND TRACK OF HER WORK SHOULD BE ADDED TO THIS
WEBSITE
Yes Len! Correct! Also, did you know that Katharine is a great theater performer?
Salutations from the wet, west coast. But, wait, the sun will come out!

Me ha encantado tu descripción de la primera hora del día y de los hábitos alimenticios en Madrid, lo elevas a algo religioso. De verdad, se me han erizado los pelos del brazo mientras leía, nunca había parado a pensar tan atentamente en ello.
Gracias
Muchísima gracias, Alex.
What a great blog to wake up to! It definitely makes me want fresh squeezed orange juice. Keep up to good work, great photos.
Can you hear me weeping across the ocean? It’s gray and cold here–you know, typical Vancouver!
Beautiful photography – I especially love the oranges (now my current desktop!). Loving your blog!
Everything about your blog and your words and the story you tell is stunning. I love visiting you…it’s my breath of fresh air
Ciao, Devaki @ weavethousandflavors
The tomato jam (?) what is it made of? Is it cooked? It looks delicious.
Hi Lindsay. It’s more like fresh uncooked tomato sauce, or sometimes grated tomatoes. It’s really delicious!
recipe please – I love fresh tomato anything. yum! Thanks Kath
I will start to include recipes from now on…
But for now…take fresh tomatoes and grate them using a box grater. Add some olive oil, and salt. Smother over a thick wedge of toasted peasant bread.
¡Buen provecho!
will try this tomorrow morning. Can’t wait!
Great and informative read… the visuals are tremendous!
beautiful- the whole layout.
